May 1st Elections
After a hard fought and exciting election camapign, the residents of Newcastole-under-Lyme delivered their verdict on the Conservative-led Borough Council in the ballot boxes on Thursday 1st May.
As the polls closed at 10pm, the ballot boxes were locked away before the count the following morning. Arriving at the count, candidates and party activists reflected the the mood in the Nation as news filtered in from across the UK. The Conservatives had stormed to victory winning councils in the North of England as well as taking seats in Labour heartlands in Wales, and the last bastions of New Labour's 1997 victory - removing Labour from thier last power hold of Reading in the South of England.
Newcastle's results reflected the national mood, with 5 Conservative gains. CF member Christian Barber was elected with a huge majority to Newchapel ward, unseating the Labour incumbant. Christian is now the youngest councillor in Newcastle at just 18.
Labour lost all the 9 seats they were defending on the day. Gaining one back from the Lib Dems's following an earlier defection.
Overall, the Conservatives won the popular vote in both the Borough and the Newcastle under Lyme Constitutency with a convincing margin. The Conservative-Liberal partnership on the council recieved well over 50% of the vote share, showing that the voters in Newcastle welcome the change following 38 years of Labour control, and can see the difference a Conservative led council can bring; with lower council tax rates and better public services.
CF celebrated into the night on Friday, with the results from London filtering in. Boris Johnson was declared Mayor to great cheers.
